Total complaints to The Property Ombudsman on the rise

The total amount of complaints to The Property Ombudsman (TPO) rose 3% last year whilst the amount of pay-outs to consumers rose a staggering 11%.

The report released identifies there were 3,658 complaints made, 2,408 of them financial awards were made totalling a value of over £1.3m.

What’s more interesting is there was a significant increase in the number of letting issues but a fall in complaints about sales.

Statistics also illustrate a 68 per cent increase in enquiries since the emergence of an “open all hours” online service, which is predominately online chat. This service used by almost 6,500 people, which resulted to 946 new complaints being received.

Throughout 2017 there was a total of 2,212 lettings complaints which were actually resolved during 2017, 67% were supported by the TPO, 11 per cent more than the previous year.

Demographically Greater London had 23% of these complaints with other parts of London making up 31% of these issues.

Compare this to complaints within the sales sector where only 1,098 of complaints received were actually resolved, 16 per cent fewer than in 2016. However a very similar percentage of these were supported by the TPO. Out of these complaints 60% were made by sellers and 34% by buyers.
